"It’s been forever since I’ve seen you.” Colleen clicks send on her phone, feeling like a weight has been lifted. Finally, she’d reconnect with Kristi. It had been way too long. Kristi picks up her phone and smiles. It’s so nice to hear from old friends. There’s just no way right now with her work schedule, though. “I know, I know,” she texts back. “We need to get together. Things have just been so busy. We will get together soon. Promise.” Days turn into weeks that turn into months. Colleen feels reassured that Kristi at least wants to get together. Kristi feels satisfied that they’ve connected. She’d also “liked” some of Colleen’s Facebook posts. That counts, right? But, at some point, she wonders, are they no longer friends? She puts it out of her mind. She’s building a life and needs to focus.
But Colleen has never been a quitter. She tries again with another text. “I hope you are well. I miss you. Dinner this week?” Kristi winces. Life is so hectic. She can’t deal with this right now. “Can’t sorry. Too much going on. xo” Another six months go by, but nothing materializes — not even a quick coffee. Not even a 10-minute phone call to check in. Even the text messages disappear. The dynamic of their friendship changes so slowly that neither of them truly realize the damage that is being done. Until Kristi, who was so busy, realizes that she has lost the connection with several of her friends. A successful career. The executive title. Good colleagues. A beautiful home. A fancy car. Brand name clothes. Kristi finally has everything she thought she wanted, and yet, there’s a nagging feeling that something is missing. How can that be? Then, it suddenly hits her. She’s missing what she really needs — her friends.
